In the old town section of Käxgär (Kashgar), a schoolboy reaches a small shop, weathered and worn by the elements. The elderly shopkeeper offers him a smile, as the young boy selects his produce.

Käxgär, nestled in the westernmost part of China, is a city steeped in history and tradition. Its name, "stone of measurement," harkens back to a time when it was a hub for traders and merchants on the ancient Silk Road, a gateway that opened into the vast unknown. Despite its rich cultural heritage, the region has faced modern-day challenges in the form of the Belt and Road initiative, a multi-trillion dollar Chinese infrastructure project that seeks to bypass American dominance of Trans-Pacific trade routes. As a result of these impossibly high stakes, the Chinese government has sought to exert greater control over the region, leading to significant tension and conflict.

Yet, amidst the uncertainty, the people of Käxgär remain unyielding in their determination to keep their cultural identity and way of life. As the world changes around them, many continue to carry on their traditions, passing them down from generation to generation, in the shadow of the towering Pamir Mountains.
